How Central Bark Henrietta Helps Keep Our Day Care Community Healthy

At Central Bark Henrietta, our goal is to provide a fun, safe, and enriching environment where dogs can socialize, play, and build confidence. One of the most important parts of maintaining a healthy day care community is recognizing when a dog may need a break.

Just like people, dogs can have days where they don’t feel their best. Because our dogs spend time playing, interacting, and socializing together, we take health seriously and work together with dog parents to help keep everyone safe.

Our approach is simple:

We believe in being proactive, transparent, and making thoughtful decisions based on each individual dog.

Our Vaccine Requirements

Before joining day care, all dogs at Central Bark Henrietta must be current on required vaccinations.

To help protect the health of our day care community, dogs must be up to date on:

  • Rabies
  • Bordetella
  • DHPP (Distemper Combination Vaccine: Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, and Parvovirus)

Keeping vaccinations current is one of the most important steps families can take to help protect their own dog and the other dogs who attend day care.

While vaccines are never a guarantee that a dog won’t become sick, they are an important part of maintaining a healthy social environment.

Why Dog Health Matters in a Group Environment

Dog day care is a social environment. Dogs interact closely with each other, share spaces, and participate in group activities throughout the day.

Even with excellent cleaning procedures, vaccination requirements, and safety protocols, illness can occur in any communicable environment where dogs share space or socialize.

Our goal is not to eliminate every possible illness — that’s not realistic. Our goal is to:

  • Identify health concerns early
  • Offer thoughtful, timely, and transparent information
  • Make responsible decisions for all the dogs in our care
  • Support the well-being of every dog, whether they’re here or at home

A healthy day care community requires teamwork between our team and our pet parents.

Signs Your Dog May Need a Day at Home

One of the best ways families can help is by monitoring their dog before arriving for day care and communicating any health concerns with their veterinarian and our team.

Some signs that your dog may need to stay home from day care include:

  • Diarrhea or loose stool
  • Vomiting
  • Coughing
  • Frequent or unusual sneezing
  • Excessive reverse sneezing
  • Nasal and/or eye discharge
  • Unusual tiredness or lethargy
  • Loss of appetite
  • Signs of pain or discomfort, such as hesitation before physical activity or limping
  • Any illness diagnosed by a veterinarian which could affect safety and/or health in a social environment

Not every symptom means the same thing for every dog. If your dog is behaving abnormally or they just seem “off”, please keep them home and continue to observe them. Sometimes the best choice for your dog—and the day care community—is simply taking a day to rest and recover.

We encourage families to use their best judgment and contact their veterinarian and our team if they are unsure of their dogs immediate healthy needs.

How We Handle Dogs Who Become Sick While at Day Care

Our Enrichment Specialists are always observing dogs throughout the day. If we notice that a dog is not feeling well, we will continue monitoring, document what we see, and determine the appropriate next step.

Depending on what we observe, we may:

  • Adjust their activities to provide additional rest time
  • Contact the owner if we feel it is necessary
  • Support the owner to ensure their dog is receiving appropriate care

Every situation is evaluated individually. We consider the dog’s current behavior compared to previous visits, any symptoms, and their overall well-being.

Our goal is always to make the best decision for that dog.

Communication is an Important Part of Our Process

Transparency is one of our core values at Central Bark Henrietta.

If we notice something unusual during your dog’s visit, we will communicate that with you when appropriate, through direct communication. That may be a phone call, or an “end-of-day update” during their regular pickup.

We want families to understand what we observed, what we are doing to support their dog, and any recommendations we have.

Our goal is to keep everyone informed and work together to help dogs live their best lives.

When Should a Dog Return to Day Care?

If your dog is determined to be sick, we recommend speaking with your veterinarian to determine when your dog will be ready for increased activity and can safely return to the day care environment.

The exact timing may depend on the situation, but allowing dogs time to fully recover helps protect:

  • Your dog
  • Other dogs in our day care community
  • Our Enrichment Specialists
  • The overall safety of our facility

Many of our day care dogs attend on a weekly schedule, so taking time away to recover is usually a manageable adjustment. A break from activity can help your dog recover from illness more quickly.

A Shared Responsibility Between Our Team and Pet Parents

The healthiest day care communities are built when everyone works together.

Our team is responsible for:

  • Observing dog behavior and body language
  • Managing social interactions to keep activities and play as safe as possible
  • Maintaining cleanliness and safety protocols
  • Ensuring health and vaccination requirements are followed
  • Communicating valuable information to pet parents
  • Making thoughtful decisions for every dog at the facility

Our pet parents help by:

  • Keeping vaccinations current
  • Monitoring their dogs before day care
  • Maintaining a healthy routine to meet their dog’s needs
  • Keeping their dogs at home if they are not feeling well
  • Communicating any behavior/health concerns or recent illnesses

Together, we can create a healthier environment where dogs can continue enjoying safe, structured socialization and personalized care.
