Before opening Central Bark, I spent my career working in technology. Over time, I watched that industry change rapidly and eventually reached a point where I had to decide what came next. Rather than continuing to chase the next opportunity, I chose to pursue something I had cared deeply about for years: dogs.
I knew I wanted to build something rooted in relationships, trust, and service. As I explored what that next chapter could look like, I kept coming back to Central Bark. Its Whole Dog Care philosophy reflected the kind of care I wanted every dog to receive, and I knew it was the right fit.
Of course, opening our doors was only the beginning. Every day has brought new lessons, new challenges, and a deeper appreciation for the responsibility that comes with caring for someone else’s dog.
That responsibility became even more personal when we brought home our newest puppy, Penny. One day, she’ll experience everything we offer the families who trust us with their dogs. She’ll have a first-day evaluation, meet our team, make new friends, and spend her days with the same people in the same spaces as every other dog in our care.
The First Day Is Just the Beginning
It didn’t take long for me to realize that no two dogs experience daycare the same way. Some walk through the front door ready to meet everyone, while others take their time, watching the room before deciding they’re comfortable enough to join in. In many ways, it’s like a child’s first day at school.
That’s why every relationship begins with a FREE First Day Evaluation. It’s our first opportunity to understand a dog’s personality, confidence, communication style, and how they respond to a new environment while also getting to know the people who love them. Those first visits give us the foundation for everything that comes next.
An Individual Approach
Many people assume dogs are grouped by size alone, but that’s only part of the picture. Personality, confidence, play style, energy level, and social preferences all influence where a dog is most likely to feel comfortable and successful. Finding the right fit takes time because it depends on getting to know each dog individually. As we continue getting to know a dog, their needs often change, and we adjust right along with them.
The best daycare experience is built on balance. Dogs need opportunities to play, socialize, and learn, but they also need time to rest, recharge, and simply be dogs. That balance helps create a calmer, more enjoyable experience and gives each dog the opportunity to be successful throughout the day.
Our Commitment to Safety
If there’s one area I’ve spent more time thinking about than any other since opening Central Bark Henrietta, it’s safety.
The longer I’ve been in this business, the more I’ve realized that there isn’t a single policy or procedure that creates a safe environment. Safety is built through hundreds of thoughtful decisions made throughout the day. It comes from understanding the dogs in our care, paying attention to the small changes that happen from one day to the next, communicating as a team, and making good decisions based on what’s best for each individual dog.
Our Team
When people think about what makes a great dog daycare, they often picture the facility, the play yards, the equipment, or the toys. Those things certainly matter, but they don’t define a dog’s experience. The people caring for them do.
What I’ve learned as an owner is that creating a great experience for our customers starts with creating a great environment for our team. I want Central Bark Henrietta to be a place where people continue learning, building confidence, and discovering opportunities they may not have imagined for themselves.
One of our team members joined us simply because she loved dogs. She embraced coaching, welcomed feedback, and gradually discovered a passion for dog behavior and training. Today, she’s pursuing formal education in dog training, and we’re excited to support that journey while continuing to learn alongside her.
I’m incredibly grateful for the team we’ve built and for the care they show our dogs and their families every day. At the end of the day, that’s what our customers remember. They remember the people who greet their dog by name, celebrate their successes, notice when something seems different, and treat them like part of the family.
Looking Ahead
Building Central Bark Henrietta has challenged me in ways I never expected. It’s taught me patience, humility, and that there’s always something more to learn. Every dog we’ve met and every family we’ve gotten to know has helped shape the business we’re still building today.
I’m incredibly grateful to my parents, who believed in this business long before we opened our doors and who now share this journey with me as my business partners. I wouldn’t be where I am today without their encouragement and support.
I also hope that as my children grow older, they’ll see more than a business. I hope they’ll see the value of serving others, building relationships, and creating something that makes a positive difference in our community.
