JULY 2013 DOG OF THE MONTH IS A CHARMING GOLDEN! A great Golden Retriever named Arnold Gus is our July Dog of the Month. And yes, he does have two names. You have a middle name, so why shouldn’t he? Arnold Gus was rescued from a dreadful puppy mill and his human mom, Julianne, loved both the name Arnold and Gus and could not make up her mind as to which she liked best. Therefore, she kept both names. Around here, he is known as AG. This would make sense as “mom”Julie, aka Julianne, also uses two names. She and her boy friend not only “restore” dogs, they have restored a 1971 Camero Z28. Everyone knows that the Golden is one of the most popular dogs in America. That is because they are highly intelligent, eager to please, are great hunting companions, and superb guide, assistance, and search & rescue dogs. You can easily recognize a golden by his beautiful, golden-colored coat. This gorgeous double-coat sheds seasonally and needs regular brushing. The breed originated in the Scottish Highlands in the late 1800’s and was primarily a hunting dog. A wealthy Scotsman crossed his original “Yellow Retriever” with the Tweed Water Spaniel (now extinct) found on his estate. Later inter-breeding of Irish Setter, Bloodhound, and more Tweed Water Spaniels produced the retriever we know today. Goldens today can adapt to many different living situations but do require daily exercise. AG needed a bit of socialization and had to learn some house rules that he had not learned at the puppy mill. Having been confined until rescued, he did not know how to get in and out of the car. He also had some health issues resulting in digestive problems. A loving mom worked hard with Central Bark staff who suggested supplementing high quality foods with digestive enzymes and this did the trick. AG is a social dog and has many male friends to roughhouse with here at CB. He is quite a ladies’ man and forgets the rough stuff when they are around. Then he can be as nice and sweet as can be! Smart boy! He does have a special lady-friend and that is Molly K, a lovely Golden. However, when Molly is not looking, AG is spreading his natural charm around to all the Golden girls and to some of the Yellow Lab ladies, too. He does have a thing for blondes… AG is fortunate in having a water-repellant coat because his favorite thing at Central Bark is the doggy swimming pools! Hooray for summer! Arnold Gus, our happy, lucky Golden Retriever is the July Dog of the Month. Congratulations, AG.
Congrats, Arnold Gus!
