TWO DOGS ARE THE FEBRUARY DOG(S) OF THE MONTH Bernhardt and Wilhelm…can you tell from their names that they are dogs whose origins are in Germany? These two are red, black, and tan Miniature Dachshunds, who are the “boys” to their loving mother, Chris. A very experienced mom, she has also raised boys of the human variety, all grown. Bernhardt and Wilhelm benefit from her mothering as they are somewhat pampered. Her K-9 sons are fed the very best food and homemade treats, including fresh fruits and vegetables. Chris knows that “Doxies” (as they are commonly known) are prone to having back issues so maintaining them at a healthy weight is extremely important – and both of them are at the perfect weight. This pair gets plenty of exercise through long daily walks and playtime outdoors. Central Bark activities add more enjoyment to their healthy routines. Wilhelm is the black and tan one. This color is also known as Wild Boar. That designation fits his personality to a “T”. Wilhelm is confident, bold, and exactly what you would expect from a dog with his heritage. Bernhardt joined the group in August 2011, before Wilhelm. He was eager to introduce his “brother” to all of his friends. Bernhardt loves everyone and would play all, every day if he could. Dachshunds were first bred in the early 1600s in Germany. The goal was to create a fearless, elongated dog that could dig the earth from a badger burrow and fight to the death with the vicious badgers. The Dachshund, "badger dog" in German, is a lively breed with a friendly personality and keen sense of smell. Known for their long and low bodies, they are eager hunters that excel in both above-and below-ground work. Of course, Wilhelm and Bernhardt are family companions and wouldn’t know how to catch a badger! One of the most popular breeds according to AKC® Registration Statistics, they come in three different coat varieties (Smooth, Wirehaired or Longhaired) and can be miniature or standard size. Chris dotes on these two guys, but that has not prevented her from spoiling us here at Central Bark. She is always bringing extra dog treats for all the dogs and additionally, some terrific human snacks for the rest of us! We love Chris! When you see Chris, congratulate her on her adorable “boys,” Wilhelm and Bernhardt, who are the February Dogs of the Month! (If this pair had been a male and a female, would Chris have named them Hansel and Gretel? Just wondering…)
Congrats, Bernhardt and Wilhelm!
