When you think of Ireland, you’re likely to visualize the fun celebrations of St. Patrick’s Day. Your mind may even conjure up some images of mischievous Leprechauns, vibrant green landscapes, beautiful castles, and lively pubs but do you know any of the breeds of dogs who are native to Ireland?
Irish Wolfhound
One of the most well-known Irish breeds is the Irish Wolfhound! These big dogs of Ireland can reach up to 120lbs in size and can reach a height of over 30 inches at the shoulder.
Irish Setter
The next dog you may know is the beautiful Irish Setter. This red coated breed was originally bred to use their keen noses in order to locate gamebirds for the hunter they were working with. Irish setters are still active hunting partners today and have transitioned from working alongside trained falcons, to working around the loud boom of hunting rifles.
Irish Terrier
To add a little bit of spice, the next breed we’re sharing is tenacious and spirited. The Irish Terrier is a medium sized dog that is full of energy and known as the “Daredevil” of the Emerald Isles. Irish Terriers were developed as all-purpose farm dogs. Not only were they ratters for the farms they lived on, but they were well-suited as watchdogs, flock guardians, and hunting partners.
Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier
Finally, the highly energetic Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is a hardy dog who enjoys ample outlets for physical and mental exercise. They first appeared at the Irish Kennel Club Championship on St. Patrick’s Day in 1937! Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers are fast learners and are typically exuberant extroverts, happy to meet and play with new people.
