SARGE” IS THE DOG OF THE MONTH!
We have this beautiful Golden Retriever, Sarge, as our Dog of the Month. The odd thing is that while Sarge is a Golden, his coat is RED! Is that a contradiction? We think it is the old, hidden Irish Setter genes affirming themselves in his bloodline!
Sarge joined us at Central Bark for training classes. (Clearly, he needed them!) Sharon, Sarge’s mom, and Alex, Sarge’s brother, both worked very hard to get his exuberance under control. Sarge had such a “nice personality,” but needed a bit of structure. Alex and Sharon were just the ones to provide that structure and discipline. Both are very intelligent, disciplined and determined… exactly the qualities needed to get Sarge to become a “good dog!”
Alex trained and handled Sarge during his final test and Sarge earned his American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen title. Now that Alex is off to college on an academic scholarship, (told you he was intelligent) Sharon regularly brings Sarge for Day Care, Grooming and Training
Sarge loves to come for Day Care. He has so many friends, but he does seem to have a preference for other Goldens. Goldens Arnold and Daisy spring to mind, with Arnold ranking at number one and Daisy coming in a close second.
The Golden Retriever is an extremely popular dog in the United States and familiar to everyone. However, the breed originated in the Scottish Highlands in the late 1800’s and was used predominantly for hunting. Lord Tweedmouth, whose goal was to create a superb retriever suited to the Scottish climate, terrain and available game, developed the breed.
He crossed his original “Yellow Retriever” with the Tweed Water Spaniel (now extinct) found on his estate. Later integrations of Irish Setter, Bloodhound, and more Tweed Water Spaniels produced the retriever we know today. This active and energetic Sporting breed can adapt to many different living situations but requires daily exercise. His water-repellant double-coat sheds seasonally and needs regular brushing. With his friendly temperament and striking golden color, this breed is both beautiful to look at and a joy to own
Yes, this is Sarge, beautiful to look at and a joy to own. Sharon and Alex will confirm this! Congratulate them all on Sarge’s accomplishments and his title as Dog of the Month.
