Congrats, Atlas!

JUNE 2015 DOG OF THE MONTH

In Greek Mythology, Atlas was the God of Strength! He was a Titan who held up the celestial spheres. Our June Dog of the Month is named Atlas. We are not too sure about that “strength” part. “Our” Atlas is a Schipperke. If you are not familiar with this breed, we will attempt to enlighten you. This Atlas could not have held up the heavens but do not tell him.
The Schipperke originated in the Flemish provinces of Belgium and is sometimes described as a Dutch dog, which is incorrect. He is from Flanders. They are small, weighing about 13 pounds when fully grown. This is one of the most inquisitive and impulsive breeds.
The Schipperke is an agile, active watchdog and hunter of vermin. In appearance he is a small, thickset, cobby, black, tailless dog, with a fox-like face. The dog is square in profile and possesses a distinctive coat, which includes a stand-out ruff, cape and culottes. The breed is a heavy “shedder.”
The AKC Standard describes the Schipperke as “questioning, mischievous, impudent… interested in everything around him.” They should always be kept on a leash because they will chase anything that moves. They have an inherent suspicion of strangers and make a good watchdog.
This dog does need to be with a family who will be firm, confident, and consistent in their training. He is known to be stubborn, has strong likes and dislikes, a mischievous sense of humor, and will take advantage of you if he is indulged.
Now, on to our June Dog of the Month, Atlas. Vanessa and Evan knew that Atlas was a handful, even though he was shy and lacked self confidence. He became a Central Bark dog in January 2014. His “parents” took him to classes, brought him to day care, and took him on plenty of walks. They took him whenever and wherever they could, and now he is a confident, energetic, and outgoing. In the play group, he is large and in charge! Vanessa and Evan proved to be excellent dog trainers and Atlas proved to be an outstanding student. He quickly progressed through Central Bark’s classes and is now in the Introduction to Advanced Obedience.
Vanessa and Evan were excellent dog trainers because they have experience in teaching. Vanessa and Evan are on the verge of getting their doctorate from Kent State University! However, we won’t be seeing much of them and Atlas for very long. Vanessa was offered an exciting position at a college in New Jersey and Evan also has a new position, so they will be relocating. The top criteria for their new home focuses specifically on Atlas: Major requirements are a fenced-in yard and a good doggy day care and training establishment nearby.
