Before Central Bark, dog day care wasn’t really working for Riley Rae.
Riley originally went to another day care nearby, one with dozens of dogs cycling through a single large playroom. Somewhere along the way, she stopped being herself. Some days, she didn’t even want to walk in on her own. Her dad, Dan, had to carry her inside.
One day, Dan learned that another dog had been bothering her. Riley, a dog who had never so much as growled at another dog, actually snarled back. “That was about the worst I’d ever seen,” Dan told us. “So I said, okay, that’s enough.”

Around that time, a friend mentioned that a new place was opening near Fox Valley Mall. This was closer to Dan’s home and, as it turned out, a very different kind of dog day care.

These days, when they arrive at Central Bark, Riley jumps out of the car and happily trots straight to the door. When Dan picks her up at the end of the day, she makes three or four rounds to say goodbye to everyone – and if anyone starts rubbing her belly, well, they should clear the next five minutes.
“She is so much happier at Central Bark,” Dan said. “I would hesitate to go anywhere else.”
Communication that puts owners at ease
Beyond the day-to-day experience, Dan pointed to something else he values as a dog owner: How well Central Bark communicates with him.
“I’ll get text updates letting me know how she’s doing. For example, she was having a problem with an inner ear infection, and they let me know if she’s been scratching at her ear,” Dan said. “That’s been very good. I’m very satisfied.”
A story Dan didn’t expect to tell
One more thing has stood out starkly for Dan. Last October, Riley went missing from home. As soon as Mike (Central Bark’s owner) heard that, he immediately drove out to help Dan look for her. Fortunately, Riley was found safe an sound about an hour later.
“He went that far to help out,” Dan said. “That goes a long way with dog parents, and anyone who would treat their pet like a baby like we all do. I can’t say enough good things about Mike. He’s outstanding.”
Even better, Riley seems to agree.
