The Top 5 Benefits of Fostering a Dog

Here at Central Bark Eugene, we work and partner with countless animal shelters and rescues as a way to give back to our community and help our four-legged friends find the loving forever homes they all deserve! From accepting donations year round for 4All MuttKind, participating yearly in Greenhill Humane Society‘s Giving Tree fundraiser, donating to non-profits such as Northwest Dog Project, or sharing adoptable dogs on our Facebook and Instagram, we love to help in any way we can!

We’re sure you’ve heard that fostering animals in need is important, and even lifesaving, but do you know why? On behalf of all the animal shelters across the U.S. that we partner with, below we break down the top 5 benefits of fostering a dog.

  1. Fostering provides a safe and healthy environment for dogs who need to grow, heal, or get some extra TLC while looking for permanent homes. Whether you’re fostering a small or large dog, both need love and support to have the best chance of permanent adoption. When you foster a dog, you provide them with the space, experience, and resources they need to make transitioning to a permanent home easier.
  2. Fostering creates more space in shelters. Dogs inside shelters can stay longer and resources can be used more efficiently if some of those animals were in foster homes regardless of shelter capacity.
  3. Fostering can save the lives of newborn puppies. Pee wee dogs (four to eight weeks) are considered very vulnerable and often can’t survive without round-the-clock care. Having foster care with  supplies and training can literally mean the difference between life and death.
  4. Fostering introduces dogs to prospective permanent homes. Fostered dogs benefit immensely from exposure to friends, family, and neighbors of caregivers. It’s like being a foster parent and publicist at the same time.
  5. Fostering a dog makes life more interesting. Having a dog around just makes life more fun while providing companionship for the both of you.

Simply put, fostering saves lives. The dogs in your care can go on to loving, permanent homes and the shelters in your community will have more space and available resources to help even more animals in need.
