Ethical issues are reviewed in all three small animal massage seminars. In this seminar ethical issues are developed more fully in context with evaluation of the animals as athletes and as candidates for massage therapy. Use of massage as a part of hospice care and in other 'special' situations is examined, as is the scope of practice for animal therapists. This class includes instruction in sports massage, examination of business issues, and an introduction to other holistic modalities that can be used with animals. Bring your dog to all seminars, but not required. Recommended: Guide to the Dissection of the Dog by Miller or reviewing a dog or cat anatomy book. Check your local bookstore or online bookstore. Students are encouraged to check with their state for practice regulations and licensing (at this time there are none in Wisconsin but the responsibility is that of the students).

As anyone with a pet companion can attest, animals enjoy and respond to being touched. A few gentle strokes can quiet a barking dog or set a cat purring. This is, in fact, an elementary application of massage therapy. Massage and other holistic, natural-alternative therapies are not a substitute for veterinary care, but rather a complement to it. Consult your veterinarian regularly, especially if any symptoms that may require diagnosis or medical treatment are present. Prerequisite: Introduction to Small Animal Massage Maximum: 20 people.
