AKC S.T.A.R Puppy Class

S.T.A.R. Puppy Class starting Thursday, October 20, 2011 at 7:30 PM. This class is run by Teaching Dog, LLC.

$120 for 6 week session $115 for customers of Central Bark in Oak Creek.

In November '08 the AKC implemented anexciting new program called the S.T.A.R. (Socialization,Training, Activity, Responsibility) Puppy Program.This STAR program is an incentive programfor loving dog owners to

 

1. learn responsible dog ownership
2. to take their young dogs through a basic training class
3. to provide an opportunity to socialize their pups with the other puppies in the class
4. and to receive information on puppy behavior issues and manners.

In this 6-week puppy class we will teach crate training,house breaking, nipping, chewing, jumping up, andexercises to prevent resource guarding. Basic obedience such as sit, down, come, andwalking on-leash will also be covered. Teaching appropriate social behavior with other dogs will include plenty of time for the pups to play together in off-leash sessions.

BONUS: When you and your puppy complete our 6-week puppy class and you both pass the Puppy Program test (see below), you will be eligible to enroll with the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program which includes receiving the following from the AKC:

1. an AKC S.T.A.R. puppy medal
2. an AKC S.T.A.R. puppy certificate (suitable for framing)
3. an AKC Puppy Handbook
4. an opportunity to enroll in the AKC Companion Animal Recovery Service
5. an opportunity to receive the AKC monthly email newsletter called "Your AKC" for additional training tips and up-to-date information

Puppy Program Test items include:

1. Puppy allows petting by a stranger
2. Puppy allows handling and brief examination of ears and feet
3. Puppy walks politely on-leash
4. Puppy sits on command
5. Puppy does a down on command
6. Puppy comes on command
7. Puppy can walk politely past strangers while on-leash
8. Puppy allows a stranger to hold its leash
9. Puppy shows minimal reaction to loud noises and strange objects
