Fun Facts About "Fido"
The Cambodian Razorback
This new monthly column will present rare and strange dog breeds that populate our world, but which you may have never seen before. These dogs aren’t usually paraded at an American Kennel Club show, or portrayed as the sidekick of a 10-year old boy on some TV comedy show. These dogs are truly bizarre and unique and sometimes amazing.
This month’s “Fido” is from Southeast Asia. He is a Cambodian Razorback.
Look at those bumps sticking out on his back. This is certainly not the most attractive dog we have ever seen. He is a Razorback dog and several breeds fall into this category.

Fido is a longhaired dog, he is usually about 20 inches tall at the shoulder, and can weigh as much as 60 pounds. The tail is bushy and the ridge on his back should be quite pronounced. They come in many colors and white, black, fawn, brown or combinations of these colors are common.
Fido is powerful, muscular, active and agile. He is very friendly and good-natured with his family.
Nevertheless, he can be territorial and protective when strangers come around. A Cambodian Razorback does need to be socialized at a very early age and is not a good breed for a new dog-owner. Another Fido Fact is that this breed rarely barks. You will only hear from him when there is a need for it.
The ridge down his back is hair that is oriented in the opposite direction of the hair on the rest of his body, ending in various crowns that resemble cowlicks.
There are three types of Ridgeback Dogs known in the world; The Rhodesian Ridgeback from South Africa, the Thai Ridgeback, and the Phu Quoc Dog or Indo-Chinese Ridgeback from Southeast Asia. There is also a new and very rare Ridgeback Dog in the Mekong River Valley of Cambodia.
Well, there you have it. A very unique and rare dog. Yes, Fido can be a cuddly little Beagle puppy or a huge Russian Borzoi. This column will show you breeds you can only imagine.
